Acupuncture:
What is Acupuncture?
As the Random House Dictionary defines it,
acupuncture is "a Chinese medical practice or procedure that treats
illness or provides local anesthesia by the insertion of needles at specified
sites of the body."
The word "acupuncture" comes from the
Latin words acus, meaning "needle," and pungere, meaning
"puncture."
Acupuncture involves the placement of small
gauge solid needles in particular points on the surface of the body to produce
a desired effect via the release of various neuropeptides (central nervous
system neuro-chemicals). The precise location of points are grouped on
fourteen paired pathways (meridians) which are arranged over the surface of
the human body. General references are made to the flow of Qi(Chi) through
these paired meridians with the obstruction of flow resulting in illness
either in the peripheral locale and/or a deep distant position
The goal of treatment is to restore the
harmonious flow of Qi through the blocked meridians and ultimately the entire
body.
